Unit One introduced a number of foundational concepts as well as a basic framework for evaluating one's teaching methods as well as the type of learners one will encounter. Basic foundational concepts and basic learning framework provide the instructor with clear and concise ways to evaluate their own teaching, which can lead to breakthroughs that provide the students with a refined teaching methodology that is beneficial to both the teacher and student. In addition, the conceptual foundation for the types of learner one will encounter allows for further and personalized refinement for each student, if required, and also creates a series of goals aspiring English speakers to aspire to. Furthermore, the unit discusses the qualities a teacher should have. The five I chose as being most important are a reflection of my many years in the field teaching archaeology and history and are patience, kindness, encouragement, provide quality feedback complete with examples and or reasons that something should or shouldn't be and why. In addition, I was asked to select the five most important roles a teacher should have. My five are as follows: -Model: The teacher is the fount from which English springs for many of the students one will encounter on this journey. Using proper English and teaching confident speaking and pronunciation. -Tutor: Tutoring implies a more personal role. Utilized when students are working individually Tutoring could come into play if one needs to catch up someone in the group. No one gets left behind. -Participant: I have found that being a direct participant in the student experience and coming ‘down to their level’ often has amazing results. I’ve worked with large groups in intense learning situations and direct engagement always yields good results. -Assessor: One of the hardest but most necessary roles of the teacher. One must be able to provide honest feedback without being negative. One must never show frustration. -Organizer: One must be highly organized and able to flow through the lesson plan and this also allows for planning in order to make that happen. Overall, I felt Unit one was an excellent introduction and provided a useful conceptual framework as well as terminology with which one can construct metrics in order to evaluate the students according to the levels of language ability.
