Unit 11 covers receptive skills. These skills are reading and listening to obtain different types of information. There are two broad categories of receptive skill, those used for a purpose and those used for pleasure. Sometimes the receptive skills categories can mix, such as, if you were reading your favorite book for a book project.
There are different types of reading and listening: predictive reading, in which the student guesses content based on an article headline, detailed reading, where the reader is reading or listening for very specific details and doesn't need the entire text, general idea or skimming, where the reader is only reading for the gist of the text, detailed reading, which is a close reading, and deductive reading where the reader deduces the meaning of words or phrases from the ones around them.
These skills aren't engrained in students. Teachers have a few techniques to help students use their receptive skills the best of their ability as receptive skills can be hindered by language difficulties. Teachers can pre-teach certain words, but carefully as they don't want their students not to be able to use receptive skills on their own. There's also text selection which is always important as it needs to be an appropriate reading level for the students being taught, as well as, the topic of the text, which should draw the students in. The teacher should create interest in the topic by incorporating students' interests into lessons. The last thing teachers can do is give comprehension tests, such as gap fill or jumbled sentences to judge how well students are actually understanding the content being presented.
