One would think that teaching reading or writing is not as important as teaching listening and speaking to beginners. Since we learn our native language by listening and producing speech in our early years we tend to believe that we should concentrate on skills that require more instant effort on the part of the user. We usually have more time to think when we are reading or writing so we may think that, if we can make our students speak, reading and writing will naturally develop.
