Unit 13 tackled about the Phonetics and Phonology in the English language.Phonemes represents sounds in English language. Many teacher are also quite unsure with the proper teaching when it comes to pronunciation. There are some issues that needs to be focus on like the lack of concerned with how a word is traditionally spelled.Consonants and Vowels is integral in pronunciation,by using the phonemic chart.it shows symbols on how to properly pronounce English words. As we used this chart the movement of our mouth is necessary correctly pronounce a word. There are consonants that we use the front and back of our mouth to create a sound. The shaded symbols found on the consonants part of the chart are called unvoiced phoneme, where vibrations does not take place and the rest are the voice phoneme where vibration exists.A simple technique of putting the two fingers on the throat will help students understand the difference. The Vowel sound are divided into two sounds, the pure vowel and within this is the long vowel sounds with a colon represents. There are the Diphtongs, consists of two vowels sound and require a movements of the mouth to make a sounds.I have learnt about the Manner of Articulation,The plosives,in where a little explosions of sound with our breath and the closure in the vocal tract,build-up of air and the sudden release of air are in used,Affricates is close to plosive but there is a gradual release of air,Fricatives there is the friction in the vocal tract and the friction came from the front of the mouth, the tongue and teeth and the middle of the mouth, the Nasal is made by making obstacles in mouth then air from vocal escaping through the nasal cavity where both lips are closed, center of tongue up at alveolar ridge and sides of the tongue closure further back,The lateral which is only one of them where the tip of the tongue is placed on the alveolar ridge and air escapes through the mouth laterally along both sides of the tongue and the Approximants, there are three,it is in the middle of the mouth and there is no audible friction and the tongue is not touching the alveolar ridge. The place of articulation deals with the placement of vocal organs when producing a sound and we need to be aware of our vocal organs location to be able to distinguish if we are properly using it.This includes the lips(Bilabial),Labio-dental,Dental,Alveolar ridge,Hard and soft palate,Nasal cavity, glottal and the Vocal chords.
