From this unit, I learned that the teacher can assume multiple roles in the classroom. Each these roles has a specific purpose. For example, teachers should assume the role of manager when taking control of the class in order to give instructions. On the other hand, a teacher may need to take the role of model to provide students with an example of how the English language sounds. I also learned that being a good teacher is dependent upon a person's ability to weave throughout these varied roles. This unit also taught me the different stages of learners of a second language and how these six levels are paralleled in the Common European Framework. While these stages may differ between cultures, they are good measuring tools for determining where a language learner sits currently. I also learned how the learning experience differs for learners of varying ages. For example, adult learners may be more motivated to learn but also more timid about making mistakes. Younger learners, on the other hand, are not there by choice so may be less motivated. These younger learners are also less self-conscious when it comes to making mistakes. They also may have an easier time learning English from context as they learned their first language.
