This unit was about receptive skills, meaning understanding through listening and reading.
There are several specific skills that are employed when reading or listening:
- Predictive skills - these let you predict the content from the headline.
- Scanning for a specific information without having to read everything.
- Skimming - for a general understanding of the content.
- Detailed information - to understand everything in detail.
- Deducing the meaning from context.
The unit also gave information on how to select the right language for the students to practice on.
The text or audio should be interesting to the students to encourage participation. Since everyone has different interests topics should vary. The level of the language should be appropriate to the students. Some vocabulary can be pre-taught but students should also learn to understand words from their context.
