I learned to read Phonemic Symbols. It seemed complicated at first, like a foreign alphabet, but it quickly made sense. I learned about phonology, stress, rhythm and intonation. In addition to learning which part of a sentence to stress, we learned what parts of a word is usually stressed. The meaning of words and sentences can change depending on stress and intonation. This was very helpful towards helping students fine tune their English language speaking skills.
