Unit 4 covers the present tenses. There are four present tenses with four different uses: 1. present simple - I write, I don't write, do I write? a. used for habitual or routine actions, permanent situations and facts, commentaries, directions and instructions, newspaper headlines, present stories, and historical sequences. 2. present continuous - You are singing, you aren't singing, are you singing? a. used for talking about an action in progress, talking about a temporary action that may not be in action at time of speaking, emphasizing frequent actions, background events in a present story, describing changing situations, and referring to regular actions around a point of time. 3. present perfect - She has tried, she hasn't tried, has she tried? a. used when talking about finished actions that happened at an indefinite time, when thinking about actions that have been completed during an unfinished time period, when talking about something that began in the past and is still true now, and when describing past actions that have present results. 4. present perfect continuous - They have been dancing, they haven't been dancing, have they been dancing? a. used when communicating an incomplete and ongoing activity when we want to mention the duration of time and when communicating a recently finished activity with a present result.
