In english conditionals have a variety of complex forms, some of which are common but with many that are uncommon. These get changed, or backshifted, when discussing reported speech. Additionally, related time words which define when things were taking place also have to be adjusted in the discussion of reported speech. As always, there are exceptions. This is a fairly advanced topic for many students.
