This unit covered a range of grammar points: modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relatively clauses, and phrasal verbs. These are all elements of the English language which can cause significant problems for non-native speakers. Modal auxiliary verbs can express obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability, and advice. Clauses can be independent, that is they stand alone and make sense a sentence. If not, they may be dependent, which means they need to be attached to an independent clause to make sense as a sentence. Finally, they can be relative, which means that they are a dependent clause modifying a noun. They can be introduced by a relative pronoun - which, who, that, whose, mom. They can be defining, in that they give information which is essential to the meaning of a sentence, or they can be non-defining, which means that the information given is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. finally, phrasal verbs are made up of a verb + a particle, which modifies the meaning of that verb. They can be intransitive, that is followed by a direct object, or transitive, that is the object can come between the verb and the particle, or after the particle. Finally, they can be transitive inseparable, which means that the object phrase or particle has to come after the particle.
