In this unit, I learned about modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs can give a sentence different meaning depending on how they are used. Modals are can, could, may might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't and ought to. They can be obligatory, possibility, permission or prohibition, ability and advice. A verb follows a modal verb. I also learned about two voices: active and passive voices. In an active voice, the subject of the sentence does the action. In the passive voice, the subject of the sentence receives the action. Passive voice is used when we do not know who did the action or the receive of the action is not important. Also, there are three categories of clauses: independent, which is a complete sentence. Dependent clause, which is not a complete sentence and must be connected to an independent clause and then there is relative clause, which is a dependent clause that modifies a noun and gives further information about a noun. Finally, I learned about the different kinds of phrasal verbs - Intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. Intransitive phrasal verbs are verbs that cannot or do not take objects. The prepositional functions as a particle and must follow the verb. Then there is transitive inseparable are phrasal verbs that require direct objects and may also take indirect objects. Last the transitive inseparable where you can separate the two words and put the direct object between them.
