This unit provides several useful tips to ensure a positive environment in the classroom. Here are some key points: 1. Eye contact, gesture, and voice a. It is important to make eye contact with students while teaching to build rapport and ensure they are involved, but don't overdo it. b. Gestures can be helpful to engage the classroom or better convey the meaning of the language. c. It is important to have clarity in your voice and to change the tone of your voice while speaking to keep the students involved. 2. Grouping students a. whole-class group - gives the teacher all attention, less organization required, less student talk time. b. work on your own - gives teacher opportunity to work with each student, increases self-reliance in students, less interaction among students c. pair-work - more student talk time, allows students to help each other, increases noise in classroom d. group-work - increases student talk time, students can choose level of participation, increases noise in classroom 3. Classroom arrangement - there are many different ways to arrange the classroom depending on space available, nationality and ages of students, student personalities, and types of chairs/tables available. It may take some experimenting to find which classroom arrangement works best with your students. 4. Writing on the board - try to write on the board and cover it up before class starts, or write on the board while the students are engaged in something else. Otherwise, ask students to write for you or try using other tools, such as an overhead projector. 5. Giving individual attention - it is okay to help out students who are struggling a little more than others, but try to make sure the students overall feel equal in receiving attention from you. 6. Giving instructions - make sure you have students' attention while giving instructions; don't give out worksheets and don't let students work on anything while you are talking. 7. Establish rapport - make sure students feel like they are in a relaxed and welcoming environment as this will help them to contribute more in class. 8. Maintain discipline - there are many reasons why kids may misbehave, so it is important to be a consistent and fair teacher. Don't be afraid to seek help from colleagues if you have problem students acting out in the classroom.
