Before one can be effectively taught, the educator must assess the student's skill. Likewise, to learn if the methods of education are working, the students must be tested. There are three main ways to learn these things: tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Though tutorials and student evaluations are just as effective and more personalized than tests, they are less mainstream, and, thusly, less explored in this course. There are several types of tests and each has it's own purpose. Placement tests, as the name suggests, are designed to discover the student's understanding of a language at the beginning of a course to better help place the student in the appropriate learning level. These tests are often multiple choice and test the fluency, grammar and vocabulary knowledge of a student. A spoken portion is also included, which grows increasingly difficult as the test progresses. A more thorough version of this kind of test is the diagnostic test, which help further identify problem sections that need to be addressed. However, both serve the same basic function. Progress tests should be used periodically to gauge which sections of the language are remembered and which require more work. All skills (reading, writing, etc.) should be included in a balanced way and include the grammar and vocabulary that the students have been currently learning. Information that has not been covered should not be included in this type of test, unlike placement or diagnostic tests. Practice tests are a useful tool to prepare students for external examinations that will be required of them outside of the language school and should follow their format and structure. There are many different types of external examinations; each serving a different purpose. Therefore, understanding the purpose for which each of the students are taking the course should be assessed to further help them in accomplishing their personal goals, as this should be our goal as educators.
