Unit 6 explains the past tenses in the same way Unit 4 did the present ones. The past simple is the base form + (e)d and is used for past actions when the time is given, asked about or it is clear the time is definite. Also sometimes it is used in follow up questions after sentences in the past continuous. The past continuous is the past form of the verb to be + the present participle and it is used for interrupted past actions, gradual developments in the past, actions that started before that moment in time and continued after it, and in descriptions. The past perfect is had + past participle and is used for the past equivalents of the present continuous, "the past in the past". The past perfect continuous is had + been + present participle and is used for situations that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that is talked about.
