An engaged, energetic teacher is critical for turning a successful lesson plan into a successful lesson in practice. Students respond to the energy of the teacher, and a teacher that is well-prepared and engaging is far more effective than one who doesn't engage individual students and simply speaks at the students as a group. Engaging individual students is an effective way of encouraging full class participation, which is critical component of teaching a foreign language. Students who are not engaged--who do not volunteer answers and raise their hand--are going to fall behind their classmates, whereas calling on individual students by name increases the overall participation of the class and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
