Unit 15 discusses the evaluation of your lessons with your students and different ways of testing their knowledge. First of all, to assess how effective your teaching is and how far students have come, you can conduct tutorials with the class and review and discuss what you have done in class in a certain period. Also, evaluation by the students themselves in the form of a questionnaire or a class discussion can deliver useful information about how the class is doing.
More formal is not always necessary but often required by schools or for example when students want to gain a certificate. Placements and diagnostic tests are used to find out what students already know so they can be placed in the right group or the teacher can design lessons around the gaps in their knowledge. Progress tests are used to test what students remember from the materials covered in a certain time period and it can be a good incentive for them to study and review. Finally, general external examinations like TOEFL or Cambridge Assessment are internationally recognised and are sometimes required for universities or at jobs. Practice tests prepare students for what is required for these tests.
