From this unit, I learned that sentences being reported back to the listener can be different from how it was spoken. When someone is directly speaking to a listener, they address themselves using the present tense or the past tense, based on when their story occurred. The rules on tense can changed when we rephrased from what we initially heard. Direct speech presents a conversation between two or more individuals, but when someone else retelling or report back to the listener, he or she must modified that speech to the according situation. For example, if my mother said "We will be in Paris by tomorrow," and if I were to reported back to a listener, I would say to them that my mother said, at that time, that we will be in Paris by the next day. The difference between the two clauses are the change of verbs and tense. The same meaning is still there, that we will be in Paris tomorrow, but when we retell the story to someone else, the tense must be changed because we're telling a story that has already occurred, or that already happened in the past, so when telling a story that already happened, we modified our language to fit with the situation.
