Unit 18 discusses four different grammatical structures: modal verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. 1. modal verbs are verbs that come together with another verb (in base form) and modify the meaning of the verb. Examples are might, may, can, could, should, ought to. They are used to convey things like obligation, possibility, permission, ability or advice. 2. passive sentences describe the same acts as their active counterparts, but with stress on the object of the action, the person or thing something happens TO (that is the subject of the passive sentence). To change from active to passive voice, use the verb to be in the same tense and the past participle of the verb from the active sentence. 3. relative clauses are a type of dependent clause in a sentence that adds or changes the meaning of a noun, and is introduced by a relative pronoun. Relative clauses can be defining (they change the meaning of the noun) or non-defining (they give more information but are not essential to the meaning of the noun). 4. phrasal verbs are verbs that come with one or two particles (a preposition or adverb or both). Phrasal verbs can be intransitive (they have no object), transitive separable (if the object is a pronoun, it comes between the verb and the particle) and transitive inseparable (the object follows after the particle.
