This units describes varying types of evaluation and assessment of the English language skills and level of students. Evaluation and consequent feedback is an important part of English learning as it helps students to understand their grasp on the language.Tutorials, self evaluation and tests all play an important role in this process .Different types of test function as methods to evaluate for different purposes. For example a placement test can guide a teacher in judging where a student needs to begin English learning and at what level. A progress test may give feedback on how well a student has understood language items enabling the teacher to give further guidance if necessary and encourages students to review language items. Guided discussion or surveys, where students participate in their evaluation, give feedback about lessons, can be effective in planning and adjusting future lessons to accommodate the students needs. External examinations should be prepared for accordingly with practice tests in a format and language level that is similar to the external examination. Different types of external examinations serve different purposes such as identifying a student as proficient in language appropriate for a business environment.
