This unit explained the four different forms the present tense can take in English. These are the present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. The present simple is used to describe habitual or routine actions, permanent situations and facts, commentaries, directions and instructions, newspaper headlines, present stories, and historical sequences. The present continuous is used to talk about an ongoing situation, a temporary action which is not going on at the time of speaking, emphasise very frequent actions, describe developing situations, refer to regular action around a point in time, and provide background events in a present story. The present perfect is used to talk about general, unspecified past experience, completed past actions carried out in an unfinished time period, or something which began in the past but is still happening now. Finally, the present perfect continuous is used to relate past activity to the present but implies that it is likely to continue in the future or/and was in the progress for some time.
