This unit is an introduction not only in teaching pronunciation and phonology but an excellent beginning in the understanding of the phonetic alphabet. Phonology being the study or science of the classification of the physical property of sound, is covered in a manner that can be introduced to students and eliminates many of the apprehensions which may accompany this important area of the language for the teacher. Intonation, the rise and fall of sentence structures as they are spoken, to indicate whether the speaker will continue or not and stressing a word in order to add or clarify meaning in a sentence, is also covered. These stresses and intonation, although taken for granted by native speakers, needs to be explained to students using techniques such as nonsense words, humming, gestures or choral work for stress. Linked speech and sound joining, also an integral part of native speech need to be explained and expressed through examples to the non native speaker in order to achieve a level of spoken natural language and fluency. An explanation of articulation and the speech organs helps provide background and context when trying to understand the phonetic alphabet. This in turn assists teachers explain production of the spoken English language especially when it is very different in sound from students own native speech.
