There is a lot to know about conditionals and reported speech, and it can be very confusing. What is important about teaching and learning these skills is to be thorough and patient, and to practice a lot. There are five main conditionals to learn, and in conjunction with studying the other tenses and a lot of in-class practice, the student can learn these skills successfully. Reported and direct speech are interesting because when we turn direct questions into a reported, indirect speech, the tense changes to the past. A good teaching exercise for this would be doing fake media interviews, as they often report in third person.
