At the beginning of a course we may meet a new group of students who do not know each other and are unfamiliar with ESL methodology, or we could meet an existing group who already know each other and have been exposed to ESL. It is always important to establish rapport, to find out the interests of the students, what their goals are in learning English, and what level each student is at. On the first day we can play games to get to know each other, or to get the mind warmed up and ready for the classes to come. The language levels may vary, or we may be teaching a very large group, so it is always important to consider how the given group may best learn in their environment. Perhaps we pair stronger students with weaker ones, or split into groups, and perhaps we organize students into small groups and appoint group leaders. It is most important that students feel included, supported, and interested. A good teacher will mix up the teaching lessons and pay attention to the students' and class' needs.
