While generally not receiving much attention, teaching pronunciation is important. Students often have trouble with pronunciation, but pronunciation brings much to the English language. The manipulation of stress and intonation provides much meaning to a sentence or word in English. The unit gave the example of "yes", while it may seem simple and not needing of instruction, since stress and intonation changes meanings so much, the time taken to help the students acquire the needed knowledge of pronunciation and to practice it, can greatly alleviate many easily escapable problems and misunderstandings.
