There are two clauses. The if clause and the main clause and either one can come in the first part of a conditional sentence. Zero conditional = if/when + present tense, present tense. You can you if/when with no conditional change. First conditional = if + present simple, will. A real situation in the future that is possible. Second conditional = if + past simple, would/could/might. Communicates a present or future unreal situation that is not true and not ever likely to be true. Third conditional = if + past perfect, would/could/might. Mixed conditional = if + past perfect, would. This is a hyperthetical past action or state and the hypothetical present consequence. Direct speech to reported speech. Simple present - past simple. Present continuous - past continuous. Present perfect - past perfect. Present perfect continuous - past perfect continuous. Past simple - past perfect. Past continuous - past perfect contiuous. Will - would. Past perfect - past perfect. Past perfect continuous - past perfect continuous.
