After reading this unit, I realized how little I understood about pronunciation. I found this unit to be the most difficult so far. One reason for this is that native English speakers may not be able to detect the variations in speech. Even though I could hear the variations when reading the examples, I found that they were subtle and sometimes difficult to detect. This can make teaching intonation and stress a bit difficult for the teacher. I also realized how complex English can be to a non-native speaker. The poem on page 12 is a good example of this as it shows that spelling and pronunciation can differ greatly. Furthermore, I was not very familiar with the International Phonemic Alphabet and realized how useful it can be in teaching pronunciation. Unit 13 was an unfamiliar subject for me, and after reading it, I feel I learned a lot about teaching pronunciation.
