This unit talked about using course books and lesson materials which can be those already produced by a company or those which can be designed by a person teaching the course. Most courses would use a combination of the two alternatives. There are advantages and disadvantages to using one or the other exclusively. I was glad to know that using already-produced materials isn't a big cop-out ie that they can enhance a classroom experience. I have been teaching one adult beginner already, using the Side by Side series. I have noticed that the problems have been high prices for books, the inducement of laziness for me and the limited creativity in each phase of the learning process. The huge benefits are knowing what to study first and the gradual progression of the lessons.
