As an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Japan, speak is one of our main focuses; more often than not, may ALTs tend to become “tape recorders” in the classroom, which is unfortunate for most on the JET program. Fortunately for me, my school does writing and I feel like I can apply what I’ve been learning in this unit. Before reading this unit, I would correct students during engage phases and when I would monitor writing stages; I feel that I have lost rapport with certain classes. The book How to win friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie says to be an inspiring leader, we should allow the other person to save face, something which I have failed to do when I would correct students in the middle of classes. Most writing activities in my school are often practical and done individually, but I am curious to try the comic strip creative writing activity exhibited in this unit.
