Learning a different language can be difficult, especially if you are self-studying and decide to a language class. This has been the case with me many times with the Japanese language. Once I took a class in the University of Toronto, which I felt didn’t challenge me enough; the class was under 12 people, but the instructor never specified our needs. I tried to take classes once again, but on my second attempt, I tried to hire a local teach further away from Toronto; like the University class, the small group lessons, this time it was 3 students, have failed to meet my need. Unfortunately, at the time I was in University and my classmates were in the 7th and 8th grade and I had to back out because my needs weren’t being met because of the teaching style and the content. When I moved to Japan for work, I tried once again to take lessons for Japanese, this time I opted for private one on one lessons, but sadly my needs weren’t met again. After my past experiences and reading this unit, I truly understand how crucial it is to clarify the needs of the client/ student when teaching in a setting such as business or private lessons.
