Some teachers like to use course books, but some teachers prefer not to. It depends on the teacher and the class. in some cases, materials, created by the teacher, are more useful to the students than coursebooks. There are two types of materials - created and authentic. Authentic materials are real text and audio pieces from newspapers, magazines, books and tv and radio shows. Created materials are the ones written by the teacher for certain purposes in the classroom, they are usually easier than authentic ones and target specific goals.
