the basic skills in any language are receptive and productive, all are important. receptive skills are reading and listening. Reading can be different, reading for a purpose, for entertainment, we read different things for different purposes. Listening can be different, too, same as reading. There are some potential problems when the students learn to read and listen. In listening they sometimes don't understand the tempo or the accent, it takes time to get used to foreign speech. When they read they sometimes get intimidated by the amount of the new words, so, a teacher should always pre-teach the vocabulary.
