Future Tenses There are several ways in English that we can talk about the future. There are predictions/statements of facts, intentions, arrangements and scheduled events. 1. The future simple: described by the verb as not having happened yet, but expected to happen in the future e.g. I'll pick you up later. 2. The future continuous: is a verb tense that is used when an action is expected to occur in the future and be completed. E.g. I will be staying. 3. The future perfect: refers to a completed action in the future. It is often used as a time expression. E.g. I will have been here for six months on June 23rd. - By the time you read this I will have left. - You will have finished your report by this time next week. 4. The future perfect continuous: is a verb tense that describes actions that will continue up until a point in the future. The future perfect continuous consists of will + have + been + the verb's present participle + ing. 5. Be going + infinite: verb 'to be' in the present, plus going to, plus base form of verb. E.g. I am going to play football next week. 6. The present simple: has two main uses. 1. when an action is happening right now. 2. when it happens regularly. E.g. our new shop opens next month. 7. The present continuous: tense used for actions happening now or for an action that is unfinished. This tense is also used when the action is temporary. E.g. I am singing at church today, the boys are playing football after school.
