Unit 19 Teaching Special Groups This unit looked at the different levels of beginners. The absolute beginner, students who have no English at all. The false beginner, students may have studied or been exposed to English previously but have not retained much language. The adult beginner, adults who made their own decision to learn English and are highly motivated. The young beginner, often lack motivation, cannot see the benefit of learning the language. However, can pick up language more easily than their adult equivalents. Lastly, the beginner without Roman alphabet, such students will need a lot of initial work on basic literacy skills. A lot of reading and writing practice is necessary. Furthermore, this unit also looked at teaching individual students. Teaching one on one has many benefits for the teacher, no mixed levels, usually highly motivated students, needs can be clearly defined, and developing a close relationship with the student. However, there can be drawbacks as well, for example some activities may be impossible to achieve and the teacher is often the partner of the student constantly, prompting, helping, working with him/her. Nevertheless, teaching children on the other hand can be the most rewarding of all classes to teach. As children possess an innate curiosity, which is a motivation factor. Children are accustomed to listening to their parents and family members by repeating words that focus on real objects. Positive encouragement, repetition and frequent praise are all essential in order to develop a child's self-esteem and language growth. Lastly, the unit looked at teaching business English. For example teaching hotel staff the type of language needed which will be useful professionally. However, this is a specialist area, which is still developing, therefore, general English is mostly taught in the business world.
