People are able to take in information both through the ears as well as the eyes, but they become receptive to that information when their mind is engaged. Unit 11 mentioned in its first couple pages that a student may hear and read something, but if you really want them to have a solid understanding of the concept being taught, you must motivate their mind to track along with them. It is up to the teacher to pick topics that interest the students, put them through different tasks that encourages them to take interest, or create the interest had it not been there before- wet their appetite to learn about other things as well.
If a teacher can consistently engage his students and encourage them to find motivation from any source, his job is half done, because without the motivation and inner drive, a teacher can only do so much.
