In this unit, we learned about the various types of exams given both within and outside of an English Language school.
Before entering a class, in order to assess a students level, he or she will take a placement test. Once in the class, in order to gain more specific knowledge of the students' levels, the teacher will administer a diagnostic test. This is also used by the teacher to develop lessons for that student. Periodically throughout the course, students may take progress tests for both the teacher and student to gauge how they are absorbing the knowledge and to identify weakness.
External exams occur outside of the language school and are standardized. These give schools and prospective employers an look at how an individual is able to communicate in English.
