Overview Some common problem situations in EFL teaching are: what to do in the first class, dealing with large classes, excessive use of the student’s native language, reluctant students and difficulties with listening activities. First class: the objective of the first should be to establish rapport between the teacher and the class, and find out about the students’ needs and English level. Large classes: The main problem with large classes is that students have less opportunities to participate in the class. To resolve this the teacher should use worksheets rather than going through activities with whole class, use a lot of pair/group works, and use choral repetition. Native language: the teacher motivates the students to speak in English by only speaking in English and only responding to questions spoken in English. The teacher should also make sure the activities are at the level of the students and that the students have enough time to prepare for it. Reluctant students: Some students will be unwilling to participate in the class for several reasons. The teacher can encourage those students to speak by using a lot of pair work, controlled practice and role-play. Difficulties with listening texts: this is a common difficulty for the majority of the students. The teacher must never give up on including listening activities on the lessons. Pre-teaching essential vocabulary, choosing the material carefully and repeating each text for a couple of times may help the student’s listening comprehension.
