Unit 15 Evaluation and Testing In this particular unit there are many different ways of evaluating students' levels and progress, and additionally I have learnt that there are external exams that I will need to prepare for my students. There are also a number of ways to assess a students' language level, these include tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tutorials can be taken as a whole group or with individual students. However, it will be much time consuming to have tutorials one on one, therefore as mentioned online this should be done at the end of a lesson each week in order to identify where the students are in their academic life and what problems they may have with their English skills. The second way of assessing a students' language level would be students' conducting evaluations for themselves. This could be accomplished through questionnaires or guided discussion. For example, students could be asked whether they feel they are getting enough grammar, if the balance of skills work is right, if they think its easy, difficult or just right. Lastly, tests, these include placement tests, which are given at the start of a term to identify the level of the students capability. Diagnostics tests, designed to tell the teacher and the student what they know and don't know at the beginning of the course. Periodic tests, teachers often give this test on the work covered. This can be in the form of a formal written test or a more informal group activity, even a game. Following on, practice tests can also be given, this particular test will help students become less anxious and understand the format of the evaluation ahead of time. This minimises the possibility of making mistakes due to misunderstandings. Lastly, achievement test, this is usually an internal test given at the end of a course.
