In this chapter / unit i learned that tests are a common way for institutions or work places to measure proficiency. There are many types of tests depending on what is type of proficiency proof is desired. It is a good way to measure placement or initial entrance level (Placement or Diagnostic test), or how you are progressing during the course (Progress tests), or at the end of a course or General proof of proficiency by passing a test known as (External Examinations). There are different Internationally recognized exams to proof English proficiency notably TOEFL, TOIEC and Cambridge Assessments.
