It was good to learn that writing is the most neglected skill in the TEFL world, but it definitely should not be ignored. In my own experiences in the working world with people who are not native English speakers, I definitely notice that their writing skills often are lacking. I learned about accuracy and fluency activities to help teach productive skills, which are used in the study and activate stage, respectively. There are controlled activities for accuracy where the language is controlled by the teacher, such as drilling and prompting. There are guided activities, which can be a hybrid of accuracy and fluency where output is still controlled by the teacher but exact language is not. Lastly there is creative communication, which is for fluency, and output is controlled by the students. It was also very helpful to learn about guidelines for a free/creative speaking activity, because I'm sure this type of activity could be awkward or students won't actively participate if the teacher is not prepared. It's all about predicting, anticipating, and preparing beforehand. During the activity, you need to set them up for success- engage their interest, set expectations, monitor the activity but don't jump in with constant interruptions. After the activity, I would talk about their successes and then talk about what can be improved on as a group. For writing skills, I had never thought about how handwriting could be such an issue! In todays business world, we often use email to communicate, so spelling skills are also hugely important because incorrect spelling can cause misunderstandings or come across as uneducated. I'm glad that games are encouraged for children, teenagers and adults alike, and that they aren't just seen as time fillers. It will be fun to take games I grew up playing, such as tongue twisters, and make them applicable for learning, such as pronunciation.
