It's important for me as a teacher to assess students' language level, so that I can know when they enter or first start the class what level they're at, what they already know and what they don't know and that I have to teach, and also to track their progress (which would be an indicator of my effectiveness as a teacher, so it's a check for myself as well.) It's also important for the students so they can be more self-aware of their own level, knowledge and progress. You can assess student language level through tutorials, student evaluation, and tests. The placement test is given to students before they are put in a class, to know which class would be appropriate for them to be in. A diagnostic test is then given at the beginning of the class for a clearer understanding of what students already know, and where the gaps are so that we can know what to give more focus on in our lessons. They typically start with easier questions and gradually get more difficult. There are progress tests, which are given periodically throughout the course to track what information students have retained. It doesn't necessarily need to be a written test, it could also be a group activity or a game. Teachers typically prefer shorter tests either every week or month, and then a longer more formal test at the end of the course. These types of tests are typically dictated by the school. Practice tests are also given to practice for the external examination they are studying for. The practice test will follow the same structure and format of the exam. There are several different types of exams and certificates that students can take to show potential schools or employers that they are as proficient as they need to be for whatever they are trying to do. All tests should test the four skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading. For the speaking part there is often an interview of the student for a formal test.
