External tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, and the General English tests of Cambridge Assessment can be used for studying in English speaking countries. External tests such as TOEIC and BEC can help learners of English obtain work in English speaking countries or with companies that use English.
Before reading this unit, I wasn't very familiar with the different English assessment and proficiency tests offered by outside organizations. My husband is Japanese and has taken TOEIC in order to get a position in the international sales department with his company. So, I know relatively a lot about TOEIC. Having seen many of the types of vocabulary and questions included in TOEIC, I agree that the tests does not really evaluate one's English communicative competence.
