I was glad to learn that when teaching ESP groups such as Business English, you don't necessarily need to be versed in the terms of that industry, and in fact it can be an advantage because you can get them to speak more English by explaining industry lexicon to you. Now I would not be so afraid to teach BE. I was surprised to learn that not all adult students would technically be really motivated to learn English, so it is still just as important to keep the class engaging, activities varied and fun, and keep the students motivated, as would be necessary if you were teaching young learners. The difference with teaching younger learners, is that because of their naturally high energy, much more discipline will be needed. But there are ways to lessen the likelihood of class disruptions, by making sure the material is not boring, activities are short, you are fair in how you discipline, you keep their self-esteem up by not calling out individuals to produce language and by consistently praising them, don't overcorrect, and by keeping language simple so they can understand. There are also monolingual and multilingual classes. With multilingual classes, it might be less likely for them to revert back to their L1 if the only language they have in common with their peers is English. However, it might be more difficult for the teacher because they all may have different difficulties with learning English. I think in both situations fruitful discussion can happen because the multilingual classes will bring different perspectives to one topic, whereas with monolingual the students will have a lot in common to talk about. Making sure they use English is all about making it clear that you are monitoring them, you are giving them the vocabulary they need, and you are very clear on instructions.
