This unit is focused on the use of course books, and the benefits of choosing to omit, replace, supplement and/or adapt materials found in them. Course books can be very useful, and helpful (especially to beginning teachers), but we must be careful as the use of them has a number of disadvantages. Most important to me is the idea that they can be unmotivating to students, and that they can result in teachers being lazy and stopping being creative and responsive to students' needs. This is a shame for everyone involved, and must be carefully, and mindfully avoided.
