Up until this unit, the coursed focused on teaching classes of adults studying general English. The unit 19 explains about some special groups: beginners, individuals (one-to-one), young learners and business English. The unit also points out the difference of multilingual and monolingual groups.
Beginners: when teaching beginners, the teacher must use simple language and be visual rather than verbal, and be patient.
Individuals: when there is only one student, the teacher have to concentrate on the student’s needs and interests. Also, there must be a great variety of activities and teaching approach so the student will not get bored.
Young learners: young learners are more motivated when they are constantly praised by teacher. They are also unlikely to keep concentrated, so the activities should be short and fun.
Business English: it is important to know what the students are going to use English for (giving presentations, sending e-mails, negotiating, explaining technical processes, etc). The course should be as specific as possible.
Monolingual class: the students are more likely to have common difficulties and have similar culture. The main difficulty with monolingual classes is that the students tend to speak in their native language. The teacher must discourage that.
Multilingual class: their common language is English, so it is easier to have students communicating in the language being taught. The main obstacle is that the students usually have different difficulties.
