Unit 18 is about modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modals can be used to express different ideas such as obligation, possibility/probability, permission/prohibition, ability, advice and differing degrees of formality. They are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't and ought to. Phrasal verbs or multiple-word verbs consists of a verb plus one or two particles and they operate as one.(A particle may be preposition, or an adverb, or an adverb plus a preposition.) Phrasal verbs can be intransitive (cannot be followed by a direct object), transitive separable (an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle or after the particle), or transitive inseparable (the object phrase or object pronoun both come after the particle. In active voice, the focus is on the doer of the action (agent), whereas in passive voice, the focus is on the subject and less focused on the agent or doer of the action. Sometimes, the agent or doer of the action does not appear at all. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. There are three categories: independent clause (complete sentence), dependent clause (not a complete sentence) and relative clause (dependent clause that modifies a noun.)
