After studying this unit, I realized what I used to do when choosing Topics was, I always went for Topics that I was familiar with and interested in. And I over taught vocabulary. So, my listening and reading class usually last very long and wasn't very productive.
Depends on the Topic or lesson, but an general idea of teaching a receptive skills lesson should be:
First, choose some topics most students are familiar with and interested in.
Second, get everybody involved and ask them the topic related questions. or brainstorm ideas on the topic.
And then, Pre-teach potentially problematic vocabulary. give the students some time to do some related exercise.
Finally, work in pairs or groups and produce a new but related topic base on the lesson.
