Starting as a new language teacher, planning lessons was one of my biggest concerns. Utilizing a coursebook can be helpful in the beginning, but it's necessary to omit, supplement and even replace certain materials to make it more interesting or fit the specific needs of the students. Authentic materials are ones that native speakers hear and read every day such as magazines, newspapers, menus and tv shows and should be used with more advanced students as they are not graded by level. Wheres as it is encouraged for a teacher to create their own materials to add to the lesson using gap fill, word search, crosswords and role-play cards and are graded by level. Don't use every lesson in the coursebook as it can become predictable and boring and add in other created materials to keep the lesson interesting.
