Some classes already have course books that teachers must use. In other situations, the teacher has freedom to design their own course books and material. In the best case scenario, the teacher can implement both the course book and their own authentic materials to cater lessons towards the needs of the students. Course books have advantages in that they have been used and tested, provide an easy format for a lesson, provide a syllabus, and are convenient. However, the downsides are that they can be boring, predictable, and not suited to students' individual needs.
