The second unit of this course emphasized to me that learning English is both a noble endeavor and an arduous task. The words often overlap or change categories according to the context of other words around them. One of the questions above asked about whether “invite” is an example of a transitive verb. It is…but it is also an informal noun when used in a different sentence. I have reflected over time that I am lucky that English is my first language. While I’ve learned other languages, I often wonder if I would have either the virtue or the resilience to attempt English if I hadn’t learned it as my native tongue. Additionally, as a native speaker, I seem to have moved beyond the necessary finite separation of words that flow naturally in a complete sentence. This Unit reminds me that, as fluent speakers, we may understand the language almost automatically. However, we also need to know how to DESCRIBE it for a non-native learner. This requires that we take that complete sentence, representing a complete thought, and break it down into the components that signal how to repeat that process with other complete thoughts. For example: “I wrote a sentence” contains a personal pronoun/ object (I), a past simple verb (wrote), an indefinite article (a) and a subject (sentence). That same pattern is repeated in the sentence “She captured the wolf”. Although we then see a definite article (the) used, the pattern is one that helps to express an entirely different complete sentence. If we can successfully reveal those patterns in speech by naming the parts represented by words, we can then effectively convey the language to someone who wishes to learn. From there, greater vocabulary can offer greater expression to the new learner.
