When a teacher starts their first lesson, it is important that they build rapport with the students and if the students are a new group, then build rapport within the students by playing warm-up games. Students learn at different levels and it is a good idea to pair stronger students with weaker ones to help with learning. In large classes, choral repetition and worksheets work well. Try to minimize the use of the students' native language even if you speak it. Explain the directions clearly and use appropriate level activities to help encourage the use of English.
